water is fundamentalOver the years, Clean Water Fund’s programs have grown to encompass a wide range of environmental and health concerns. But all of these issues and all of our work connect to clean, safe and affordable water. This remains the fundamental core of our work.
Our issues have never been more important than they are today. They cut across the entire spectrum of environmental concerns.
Minnesotans love our lakes, rivers and streams. We enjoy swimming, fishing and boating on our state’s beautiful waters. But polluters have succeeded in weakening the Clean Water Act, our waters’ best defense against degradation. EPA inaction and pro-polluter Supreme Court rulings have jeopardized the integrity of this landmark law. Without a strong Clean Water Act and strict enforcement our lakes, rivers and streams are at risk. Clean Water Fund is fighting to restore the original intent of the Act—making sure all our waters are safe for fishing and swimming.
Top scientists warn that we must decrease Global Warming pollution 80% by 2050 in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change. We can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, making the switch to clean, renewable energy, increasing efficiency and use of alternative fuels for vehicles, increasing use of public transportation and immediately investing in energy efficiency and conservation measures. Clean Water Fund is working to make the new energy economy a reality by advocating for strong, science-based policies in the State Legislature and Congress.
The energy we use in Minnesota is directly connected to the quantity and quality of our water. Energy production is the largest consumer of water in the state and the old ways of generating power which rely on burning fossil fuels or nuclear fission harm our health and our environment.
Clean Water Fund is determined to help Minnesotans achieve a health legacy. Working with 28 organizations from across the state in the Healthy Legacy coalition, we promote healthy lives by supporting the production and use of everyday products without toxic chemicals. We advocate for consumer education, business leadership, and protective policies to advance safe alternatives in Minnesota.
With spring comes gardening and, for many Minnesotans, with gardening comes pesticides. Use the Clean Water Action Pesticide Toolkit to know what to do in the case of pesticide exposure. The Toolkit also leads you to less harmful alternatives to pesticides.
Pesticides have become a common tool used to beautify our yards, landscaping and gardens. Unfortunately, most pesticides are also toxic chemicals that carry a burden of adverse health affects for our children, elderly and pets – even our strongest and healthiest can be severely harmed by pesticides.
General Mills brand Muir Glen recently announced they are transitioning to BPA-free can liners for their tomato products this year. While this is great news, other General Mills canned food brands, Progresso and Cascadian Farms, continue to use BPA can linings.
Unfortunately, the majority of our canned food is lined with BPA, the estrogenic chemical linked to diabetes, lowered sperm count, prostate cancer, and other health effects. This toxic chemical has been shown to leach out of the can lining into canned foods and liquids. Due to this exposure, the majority of Americans have BPA in our bodies from BPA can liners and other sources.
