You probably heard about the controversy surrounding the movie GASLAND’s Oscar nomination. The hydrofracking industry was so threatened by the film that they organized opposition to the film’s selection by the Academy. Find out why they were threatened! Join us on April 14 for a free screening and discussion of the film in South Philadelphia at Cha Cha’razzi, 1918 S. Bancroft St.
GASLAND is about Josh Fox, a Pennsylvania native, who received a letter in the mail offering him a deal to buy the mineral right underneath his families home in Northeast Pennsylvania. Fox set off with a camera to find out whether or not he should accept the deal, and he discovered just how dangerous this extractive industry could be for the land and public health of all of us.

From the GASLAND website:
"The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."
