Handing Our Foreign Policy Over to Big Oil

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Today, in a mostly party line vote, the Senate confirmed Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released this statement.

“At a time of increased uncertainty in international relations, Rex Tillerson – who is now the first U.S. Secretary of State in history with no government or diplomatic experience – is a dangerous choice. We are alarmed by President Trump’s inclination to turn our federal government over to corporate CEOs like Rex Tillerson.

"He has spent his entire career putting the interests of his shareholders ahead of his country and the environment, including deceiving the public in an effort to undermine the scientific consensus that human-caused climate change is real and happening now. We remained deeply concerned that Secretary Tillerson and President Trump will not continue our global leadership in the fight against climate change and will undermine our international agreements to reduce climate changing pollution."

"We will remain vigilant to ensure that Secretary Tillerson is engaging the work of the State Department on behalf of all Americans and our national interest, and not on behalf of multinational oil and gas companies.”

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
