Congressional Budget Proposals Would Pollute America’s Water and Subvert Rule of Law

Washington, D.C. – Today the Energy and Water Subcommittee and the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee are considering budget proposals with deep cuts to critical environmental programs, and ideological policy riders that would gut clean water and other health and safety protections.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement:

“The spending plans being considered in the House of Representatives are a special interest roadmap for gutting protections for clean water, clean air, people’s health, public lands, and wildlife. We can’t afford a budget that doesn’t safeguard our drinking water and ensure a healthy environment.

Just like the Trump Administration’s budget proposal, these spending bills are blatant handouts to the polluting special interests that control this Congress and the Administration.

These bills also contain disturbing policy riders that would override long-established procedures for federal rule making, in an attempt to gut the Clean Water Act and other critical safeguards. Congress must reject dangerous policy riders and reckless cuts to vital programs that protect our water and health.”

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
